# Croatia out of season: what's open, what's asleep > April or October, prices drop and the crowds vanish — but so do the boats, the parks and half the restaurants. From June to September, everything is open, everything is full, everything is expensive. The rest of the year, the country belongs to its inhabitants: the shutters of the holiday lets close, the catamarans drop to one departure a day, the seafront konobas stack their chairs. In between, April–May and October are the months of the informed traveller — provided you know precisely what still works. This guide sorts it out. ## April: the country stirs, not yet awake The Easter holidays draw people, and it is often assumed the season has begun. On the coast it really begins around 1 May; at Easter you are in the in-between. Temperatures of 15 to 20 °C, sea at 15 °C, showers possible and the bora still blowing. - **Open**: the cities (Split, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Šibenik, Rovinj) and their museums, the walls, the markets; Plitvice and Krka on their main zones; the scheduled ferries to inhabited islands; the city hotels. - **Half speed**: inter-island catamarans (one departure a day, sometimes none at weekends); the Skradin boat at Krka (starts in April); restaurants on the islands and in the villages (one or two per village, open at lunchtime); rental agencies slow to answer emails — phone. - **Closed**: boat excursions (Kornati, the Biševo blue cave, the Elaphites) while the sea is unsettled and minimum numbers are not reached; the northern zones of Krka; campsites and most seasonal lets; the managed beaches. April suits a trip of cities and hiking: Istria with its hilltop villages and truffles, Dubrovnik without cruise ships, Plitvice at full flow. It suits an island or beach holiday badly. ## May and early June: the best value of the year Everything opens progressively, the sea climbs to 19–21 °C by late May, the days are long, prices stay at low-season levels until mid-June. Catamarans return to a daily rhythm, boat trips start in fine weather, the national parks open all their zones around Whitsun. The only caveat: swimming is still fresh for the sensitive, and May weekends bring the first Italian and Austrian flows. ## September: summer without the crowds Sea at 23–24 °C, 25 to 28 °C in the afternoon, everything still open until at least the 15th, and the families went home on the 1st. Prices drop a notch after the 10th. It is, by far, the month we recommend to anyone who can choose. From the 20th, catamarans and excursions start to scale down; check the autumn timetables before fixing an inter-island transfer. ## October: mild autumn, to be organised - **Open**: everything urban; the national parks (reduced hours, Krka's northern zones sometimes closed); the scheduled ferries; hiking on the Velebit, Biokovo and the islands, at its best season; the grape harvest and olive picking — the liveliest period in the hinterland. - **Half speed**: catamarans (winter timetables from 1 October on some lines), village restaurants (many close on the 15th), lets (renting by the week becomes negotiable by the day). - **Closed**: boat excursions except with good weather and enough people; cable cars and seasonal attractions; the Skradin boat at the end of October. The sea stays swimmable for the first weeks (21–22 °C), then the autumn rains arrive, sometimes violently. An October trip is built around a car, urban bases or villages with at least one restaurant open year-round, and a land-based programme: parks, villages, vineyards, inland Istria. ## November to March: for cities and lovers of silence Zagreb has its Christmas market, Dubrovnik can at last be walked without jostling, Plitvice under snow is a marvel (reduced routes). The islands, however, are hibernating: one ferry a day, one café open. This is no longer beach tourism, it is a European winter trip — with hotel prices divided by three. ## Out of season: the reflexes that save a trip 1. Check the "off-season" boat timetables on the companies' websites, not the summer timetables still in circulation. 2. Phone rather than write to small businesses; make sure the accommodation has heating (not a given on the islands). 3. Choose bases that live year-round: cities, big villages, island capitals (Hvar, Korčula, Supetar, Mali Lošinj). 4. Have a land-based plan B for every sea day: a bout of bora cancels excursions for several days running. 5. Do not count on a boat excursion on a fixed date: operators wait for minimum numbers. ## Frequently asked questions ### Can you swim in Croatia in April or May? In April the sea is 14–16 °C: for the brave only. By late May, 20 °C: pleasant swimming in the warm hours. In October, 20–22 °C for the first two weeks. ### Are the national parks open all year? Plitvice and Krka, yes, on their central zones and with reduced hours in winter; tickets are much cheaper. The Kornati, Mljet and Brijuni depend on boats, hence on the season.
