A million and a half visitors a year on a few kilometres of boardwalk: the only variable that matters is the hour. Entrance 1 or 2, the routes, the timed ticket, where to sleep — the how-to.

The Plitvice lakes are Croatia's most visited site and one of the most beautiful in Europe: sixteen lakes stepping down through cascades, linked by wooden boardwalks, water that shifts from green to turquoise with the hour. The downside: in July and August, between 10 am and 3 pm, the metre-wide boardwalks turn into a single-file queue. Nothing spoils the place more. The good news is that shifting your day is enough to get the silence back.
Book a time slot, not just a ticket
The park caps entries per time band and online booking is compulsory in season. The 7 to 9 am slots go first, often several days ahead: as soon as your dates are set, book. An 8 am ticket gives you two to three hours' head start on the coach excursions from the coast, which arrive around 10.30.
Entrance 1 or Entrance 2?
Entrance 1, to the north, overlooks the lower lakes and the great Veliki slap waterfall: this is the spectacular arrival, the viewpoint everyone photographs. It serves routes A, B and C. Entrance 2, to the south, serves the upper lakes, calmer and more wooded, and routes E, F, H and K. You cross the park by electric boat and little train, both included in the ticket but both a source of queues at peak hours.

Our advice: Entrance 1 early in the morning, route C if you have the day, heading down first to the great waterfall while the light there is still soft, then walking back up to the upper lakes, which you will cover while the crowd is concentrated below.
The alternative: late afternoon
From around 4 pm, in season, the park sells a reduced-rate ticket, and it is the best plan for anyone sleeping nearby or with only half a day. From 4 pm to closing (around 8 pm in summer), the boardwalks empty, the low light brings out the turquoise, and a route B or E is done in comfort. You will not get the full circuit, but you will have the park to yourself. It is also a way of visiting in two halves if you sleep on site: a late afternoon, then a sunrise.
Where to sleep to be first on the boardwalks
The park hotels at Entrance 2 are expensive and charmless but unbeatable on one point: you are on the spot at opening time. The neighbouring villages — Rastovača, Mukinje, Jezerce less than five minutes away, Korenica or Rakovica at fifteen — offer far cheaper rooms in private homes. Sleeping nearby the night before is by far the best decision of your visit: Plitvice is earned in the morning, and the four-hour round trip from Split or Zadar makes that morning impossible on a day excursion.
The rest: what really matters
- Swimming is banned throughout the park — contrary to a widespread idea. For a swim in water like this, the Rastoke falls at Slunj, 30 km away, or Krka further south.
- Closed shoes: the boardwalks are slippery in wet weather and the long routes have some climbing.
- Picnic: food in the park is limited and expensive; picnic areas are provided at the train and boat stops.
- Weather: the park sits at 500–600 m, often 5 °C cooler than the coast, with afternoon storms in summer. A windbreaker is justified even in August.
- Drones, pushchairs: the former are banned, the latter discouraged — the boardwalks have steps; use a baby carrier.
Frequently asked questions
How long do you need for Plitvice?
Half a day for the lower lakes (routes A or B), a full day to see both levels (C or H). The complete K circuit takes six to eight hours of walking.
Can Plitvice be done as a day trip from Split?
Possible — two and a half hours each way by motorway — but you will arrive at the worst moment. If you insist on the day trip, leave before 6 am or aim for the 4 pm ticket and drive back after dark. What is the best season?
